DAWAH: The path to Tajdeed (Revival)

Even though Allah created mankind to worship Him (swt) alone in all aspects of life, the Makkan nation rebelled against Allah & walked in the path of darkness & eternal destruction. 1400 years ago the city of Makkah had become the most degenerate society. It was deprived of any moral fibre, the plagues of idol worship, slave abuse, abortion, prostitution, gambling, looting, cheating had become a normality in the Makkan way of life.

To liberate the people of Makkah & the rest of mankind, Allah (swt) sent His final messenger Muhammad (saw) like He sent all the messengers of the past with the same mission: the establishment of Tawheed (the worship of Allah in all aspects of life) & the destruction of the Tawagheet (plural of Taghut: anything worshipped, obeyed or followed other than Allah), for Allah said,

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allah (Alone), & avoid (or keep away from) Taghut." (TMQ 16:36)

The means used by the messenger Muhammad (saw) to achieve this noble task was the Dawah (inviting/calling). The Dawah is the tool via which every prophet was able to show the path of guidance, & purify the truth from the ways of Shaytaan (devil) i.e. the falsehood. Allah said,

Say (Muhammad): "This is my way; I invite unto Allah with sure knowledge, I & whosoever follows me with sure knowledge. And Glorified & Exalted be Allah. And I am not of the Mushrikun (ascribing partners to Allah)." (TMQ 12:108)

Dawah is an integral part of Islam & without it Islam can never be established or the falsehood be exposed. 1400 years ago, when the messenger of Allah was given the revelation of the Quran, Allah ordered him (saw) to engage in Dawah, Allah said,

And warn your tribe (O Muhammad) of near kindred. (TMQ 26:214)

Upon receiving the command of conveying the message of Allah, the prophet (saw) went to mount Saffah & warned the citizens of Makkah (the leadership & the general masses) of the ignorant & misguided path they were upon. Gradually many people responded to the Dawah of Muhammad (saw) & joined him in the struggle to establish Tawheed & destroy its vice i.e. all that is worshipped, obeyed or submitted to other than Allah. The prophet & his sahabah (companions) dedicated 13 years in Makkah engaged Dawah until Allah (swt) gave them the authority in Medina where they reaped the harvest of their hard work (i.e. Dawah) in the formation of the first Islamic state. That state continued to expand until much of Europe, Africa & Asia became part of the Islamic state.

Sadly today that great empire which was established by the prophet (saw) & his companions (ra) ceases to exist, as it was destroyed by the Crusaders on the 3rd of March 1924. There are many reason due to which the Islamic state no longer exist, but two of the core reasons were:

1) The Muslims starting abandoning the Islamic Dawah. This resulted in the Islamic awareness to deteriorate & people no longer felt Islam had answers for their life’s affairs.

2) The missionary crusaders were permitted to give their Kufr (non-Islamic) Dawah. This resulted in people referring to man-made ways, thinking that the answers of life affairs can be found in the secular ideologies (i.e. Communism or Capitalism).

The absence of the Islamic state is directly linked to the abandonment of the Islamic Dawah & permitting the Kufr Dawah. The messenger of Allah, Muhammad (saw) forewarned this result as he once said,

"By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! You must command good & forbid evil, or Allah will certainly send His punishment to you. Then you will make supplication & it will not be accepted." (reported in At-Tirmidhi)

If one was to study the reality today, an era which is void of any Islamic authority then one would realise that every corner of the world has become a mirror of what the Makkan society was 1400 years ago (i.e. before Islam). Man has turned away from the guidance of Allah & is living a life which is naked of any morals & ethics. To redeem man & redirect him towards success the Muslims must emulate the messenger Muhammad (saw) & enact what he would do in such a reality, & that is to engage in the Islamic Dawah.

Engaging in the noble deed of Dawah is incumbent upon the Ummah (nation) of Muhammad (saw). This deed must not be viewed as an inferior act as those that dedicate their life in the field of Dawah have been classed as the greatest of mankind, for Allah (swt) said about them,

And who is better in speech than he who invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), & does righteous deeds, & says: "I am one of the Muslims." (TMQ 41:33)

In the Tafseer (explanation) of this verse the great Imam, Al-Hasan al-Basree (rh) [died 110 H] said,

This is the beloved of Allaah, this is the Friend (waliyy) of Allaah. He submitted to Allaah, acted in obedience to Allaah & called the creation to Him. (Quoted by Imaam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah [died 751 H] in the book ‘Path to Guidance’)

The Dawah is one of the greatest obligations in the Deen of Islam, & is one of the greatest needs of our time. If we desire to follow the footsteps of the blessed messenger Muhammad (saw) and his companions and achieve the worldly and afterlife success we must engage in this lofty deed of Dawah to Allah working to establish His (swt) order (i.e. the Shariah in the formation of the Khilafah).
